4-H Archery

The 4-H Archery program is open to youth and teens 8 to 18. Both recurve and compound bows are used in club activities and in tournaments. The 4-H Firing Fanatics offers beginning archery classes to let 4-H'ers experiment with archery and get a feel for the sport. Visit our Archery Workshop page for a schedule of our club's next beginning archery class.

In 4-H archery I use my Head for concentration, my Heart for persistence, my Hands for taking aim, and my Health for ability.

If you are between the ages of 8 and 18, you can join the 4-H archery program. Archery is a great sport for boys or girls, youth or teen, old or young. Archery is a sport that you can do throughout your life. Whether you want to shoot for recreation or competition, 4-H can help get you into the world of archery.

The 4-H Firing Fanatics club follows the guidelines of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Program and the 4-H Archery Program in its teaching and practices. Our club is equipped with recurve bows. Most 4-H archery programs start out beginning archers using a recurve bow. Club members are allowed to shoot and compete with compound bows, but at this time, must supply their own equipment. Any club member using his or her own equipment might be subject to having their bows and arrows inspected at a local archery shop to confirm that their equipment is in good condition. As 4-H'ers progress in their skill and interest, they are encouraged to try compound bow equipment and well as more advanced recurve bow attachments to further their shooting skills.

There are different types of competitive archery. The first is Target Archery where competitors may be shooting inside or outside at varying distances. Targets are marked with 10 evenly spaced concentric rings, which have score values from 1 through 10 assigned to them. This is the traditional bullseye target. Field Archery involves shooting at targets of varying distance, often in rough terrain. Three common types of Field Archery rounds are field, hunter, and animal. Field Archery improves techniques required for bowhunting.

4-H provides state and national competitions for archery. The National 4-H Invitational Match takes the best shooters from each state in both recurve and compound competitions. The Maryland 4-H Archery Match allows 4-H'ers from Maryland to test their skills against other Maryland archers.

Whether you decide to compete or just come out for the fun of it, The Firing Fanatics invite you to try your hand at archery. You can sign up for one of our upcoming beginning archery classes and sign up for our club online.
